Cycling & Mountain Biking

Cambrian Mountains

The Cambrian Mountains is one of the most diverse and remote cycling landscapes in the UK.  It’s easy to get to, yet remains one of the most wild and hidden landscapes around.

For guided rides, or for self-guided routes, Mid Wales Mountain Bike Guides is an expert in the best routes in the area.

Local bike hire (Tregaron)

Ystwyth Trail

The Ystwyth Trail is a 34 km/20m trail linking Aberystwyth with Tregaron.  This is an ideal family route as it uses sections of the disused railway line making it reasonably level, wide and mainly traffic free.  From adjacent to Bryn Bach, you can join the trail’s offroad section to Cors Caron upland bog.

Rheidol Trail

The Rheidol Trail is a 28km/15m trail along designated cycle paths and quiet country lanes between the towns of Aberystwyth and Devil's Bridge and provides a good link between the Ystwyth Trail for the keen cyclists.

Nant Yr Arian Forestry & Mountain Bike Centre

Nant-yr-Arian forest sits high on the mountains just inland from Aberystwyth, and offers stunning high-level wilderness riding. With trails heading out into the epic scenery of the Cambrian Mountains, this is a fantastic area for those who like their riding rugged. Just be prepared for everything from true mountain climbs to river crossings and technical rocky descents.

The ‘Pendam’ Trail is a roller coaster ride of fantastic purpose built single track that weaves its way through conifer plantations, down steep side slopes and along deep river valleys. Grade: difficult Distance: 9km Time: 1 - 2hrs

The ‘Summit’ Trail is a roller coaster ride of fantastic purpose built single track that weaves its way through conifer plantations, down steep side slopes and along deep river valleys. Grade: difficult Distance: 16km Time: 1.5 - 2.5hrs

The Syfydrin Trail takes in the entire existing Summit trail with its fantastic swooping, flowing singletrack, and adds to it by leading you out onto the high open hills with stunning views. Grade: severe Distance: 35km Time: 3 - 5hrs

National Trust Llanerchaeron to Aberaeron

You can hire a bike from Pure Ride at the NT Llanerchaeron Estate and cycle the 10 mile route to Aberaeron.  Follow the signs for Ceredigion County Cycle Route 3 on the dedicated cycleway along the beautiful bank of the river Aeron.  This is a flat, traffic-free cycleway, with a picnic site enroute and several benches at scenic points.  You can enjoy fish and chips on the seafont, and a honey ice cream before returning to explore Llanerchaeron.

Elan Valley

The Elan Valley is a special place in Wales that is undisturbed, tranquil and one of most unique spots to go for a day’s worth of cycling.  Bike rental can be organised from the visitor centre, bikes range from electric, mountain bikes, children to more specialist bikes.  The Elan Trail follows a disused railway track, making it suitable for families and they also have mountain biking routes.

Testimonials

"The cottage is exactly as advertised. In fact it’s so much better in real life. The most gorgeous house, comfortable rooms and plenty of features such as the games room and super large kitchen. It rained for our entire two weeks so we didn’t make use of the outdoor eating areas. Even the eldest grandchild, when questioned why she was staying in her room she replied because it was so comfortable. This is the best house we’ve ever rented and I would struggle to equal it in another location I’m sure."
